Questions and suggestions for 2009
Afrigo Band’s Joanita Kawalya and Moses Matovu. They deserve recognition this year. FILE PHOTO

Asking what we should expect in 2009, in terms of entertainment, is like asking what the weather will be like in Greenland come Christmas time. The predictability of the entertainment scene in Uganda makes it painfully obvious. If it’s not the incessant album launches of artistes with some barely having two songs on the “album”, then it’s another Jamaican artiste “bigging up” Kampala! But could we demand for more and what more could that be? • For starters, could the up-coming album launches just feature that one artiste, who is launching the album, and not him plus a long list of artistes, all doing the role of “escorting”! It’s totally absurd! When Usher has an album launch, is he “escorted” by Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ludacris, Akon, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Pussy Cat Dolls and all other US artistes just like the case is here with say Desire Luzinda launching, “escorted” by Chameleone, Bebe Cool, Bobi Wine, Mega Dee, Iryn, Juliana, Grace, Mowzey Radio and Weasal and the entire Eagles Production! • Still on the issue of album launches, could our Christian brothers, who too have jumped onto the album launch bandwagon, resist the temptation of inviting secular artistes to their launches? Why invite Eagles Production, Bebe Cool and company to a Pastor Bugembe album launch? Wouldn’t it spoil the spiritual moment when Gospel music is mixed with interludes of Kuss Kuss and Kapapala? • And why an album launch when you only have two songs on the “album”? Honestly whom are you fooling? • Could the local artistes avoid their chest-thumping, and buying of expensive automobiles, and at least share their wealth however small, with their fans, who sacrifice their Shs10,000 (and that is entrance fee, some travel from as far as Nakaseke, just to catch a glimpse of the “Ghetto President)? The US artistes they look up are known for their philanthropy and giving back to the community. Angelina Jolie will adopt “the whole world”, Oprah built a girls school where everyone studies free of charge in South Africa and Alicia Keys donates to Ugandan children infected or affected by HIV/Aids through the charity Keep a Child Alive. CHICCO • Talking of the “Ghetto President”, isn’t it ironic that a human being who drives an Escalade and lives affluently insists on calling himself the “President of Ghetto”? • Speaking about events. What is it with the golden, silver, and bronze tickets? Most times the difference between a golden ticket holder and an ordinary ticket holder is a white plastic chair. Usually it’s the golden ticket holders who get a raw deal sitting furthest from the stage. Ask the V.I.Ps who watched last year’s big shows at Lugogo Cricket Oval from Oasis Restaurant. • Why do all early morning radio shows, sound like mini-debates on air? If Fat Boy supports one thing, Melanie will be against it and vice versa. And try changing the station and you will get more of the same on another ‘breakfast’ show! • And talking of radio topics, why do most if not all morning radio shows get their morning “debate” topics, from the newspapers? I mean if you thoroughly exhaust what is in Daily Monitor by 8a.m. who then will buy the paper? • Could Obsessions stick to one line up at least for 2009, our heads are getting dizzy with the never-ending changes! • What happened to Clever J, Qute Kaye & Dr. Hilderman Mazongoto, they came with a bang in 2007 and fizzled out in 2008. Do we expect something from them in 2009 or they have joined the list of the likes of Ziggy Dee and Napoleon? • Will Maurice Kirya ever get out of his comfort zone and become the singer everyone knows he is? • Could Pam Awards recognise Afrigo Band? • Speaking of Moses Matovu and company, when is their next ground breaking album? • If Suzan Kerunen was nominated as our Ugandan representative at the Kora Awards, why then isn’t her music playing on the FMs when Kapapala is on rotation? • What did Kuss Kuss mean? Could we expect more meaningful songs this year? The year has just begun, and if only the predictable in the entertainment world could for once offer us a twist, things could look good in 2009.
