The Executive - The President of Uganda:

The Executive of the country is headed by the President and assisted by the Vice President, Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers.

Yoweri Kaguta Museveni became President of the Republic of Uganda on January 29, 1986 after leading a successful five-year liberation struggle. He went to the bush with 26 other young men and organised the National Resistance Movement and National Resistance Army (NRM/NRA) to oppose the tyranny that previous regimes had unleashed upon the population.

After victory, he formed a broad-based government that helped to unite the country's political groups.

Since 1962 when Uganda attained its independence from the British Government, the Executive arm of the State has, as many other organs in the country gone through a number of changes. Most of these changes have been characterized by violence, animosity and coup detatas. Since October 1962, Uganda has had 6 Heads of State (Presidents), among whom are;

Sir. Frederick Muteesa II (1961-
Mr. Benedicto Kiwanuka
Dr.  Apollo Milton Obote (1964 -71)
General Idi Amina Dada (January 1971 - April 1979)
Prof. Yusuf Kironde Lule (May 1979 - December 1979)
Mr. Godfrey L. Binaisa (January 1980 - December 1980)
Mr. Paulo Muwanga (January 1981 - May 1981)
Dr. Apollo Milton Obote (1981 - Mach 1985)
General Tito Okello (April 1985 - January 1986)
Lt. General Yoweri Museveni (January 1986 - to date)

Among all the leaders that have headed Uganda's government, it is only President Yoweri Museveni who has held a two 5 year elective mandate as provided for in the constitution.

Aprt from the Cabinet, the Executive is assisted by a number of other Government officers appointed by the President and approved by the Parliament. Details >>
