Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations in Namugongo

Uganda martrys day

When it comes to Uganda safaris in early June, it’s not only about gorilla tours for which Uganda is widely known but also Uganda Martyrs day. This is a religious pilgrimage to Namugongo martyrs shrine that takes place every 3rd June. Christians from all parts of the world gather for the annual prayer session. These celebrations are dedicated to honor the catholic and Anglican converts who were executed for their faith between 31st January 1885 and 27th January 1887 at the orders of kabaka Mwanga for their faith. Their killing by Kabaka Mwanga II the king of Buganda was during the three-way religious struggle for political influence at the Buganda royal court. The Martyrs belonged basically two religious groups, which included 23 Anglicans, and 22 Catholics that had converted to Christianity after abandoning the Kabaka led traditional beliefs. Following their killing, the English Church Missionary Society used the deaths of Anglicans to enlist wider public support for the British acquisition of Uganda for the Empire. The Catholic Church also beatified the 22 catholic martyrs of its faith in 1920 and canonized them later in 1964 by Pope Paul IV in Rome.

This great religious event has attracted a lot of attention worldwide with pilgrims coming in from almost all countries around the world. This historical day sees the biggest gathering in the country flock the martyrs’ shrines at Namugongo a Kampala suburb about 15km from the city center along the Kampala-Jinja highway. Uganda Martyrs’ day is not only a public holiday in Uganda but rather a world public holiday for all Christians in the globe. Following the canonization in 1964, the government of Uganda also declared this day as a public holiday in commemoration of the first Christian Martyrs in the country. The celebration of martyrs’ day has a series of events that start a month earlier with some pilgrims walking all their way to Namugongo.

The start of the pilgrimage to Namugongo has its history way back in 1920 when Rev. Fr. Stephen Walters, a Mill Hill Missionary Priest organized a pilgrimage to Namugongo to honor the newly blessed martyrs that had been beatified. After this a Dutch priest who was the based at Nsambya walked with a group of Christians to Namugongo and celebrated holy mass at the spot where Charles Lwanga was martyred. He erected a cross at this spot after the mass, which marked the beginning of pilgrimage to Namugongo.

Today the pilgrimage to Namugongo means much more to the locals than just remembering the martyrs. The event has moved from an emotional faith moved religious ceremony to also include commercial, social and entertainment aspects. Business oriented Ugandans have used the event as an avenue to make money and they sell all sorts of products to the pilgrims. Surprisingly the list of the sold items is dominated by beverages, other soft drinks and eats. All home accessories can be bought here and you may be tempted to think that the traders are not aware of the main event of the day rather to them it seems like a market day. Entertainers who are also in most cases marketing various products and services also arrange different stands with musical instruments airing out some of the popular local music to accompany the adverts. Namugongo also became a famous spot for pork lovers, as the delicacy is the main type of meat all over the area.

However, the dedication, sacrifice, faith and love exhibited by those few pilgrims who decide to walk to Namugongo from as far as DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and from the distant areas of Uganda like Karamoja, Kitgum, Kisoro and other areas to imitate the martyrs tend to be more significant to the event than any other off topic program that is arranged in relation to the function. Today it commonly believed that a bigger percentage of those who go to Namugongo on this day are basically motivated by what they are going to eat and drink from there with very few genuine believers going for the exact cause of the event.

Uganda’s Oldest Chimpanzee Zakayo Dies At 54 Years
Uganda’s tourism sector was on 26th March 2018 evening dismayed with the loss of Zakayo, the oldest chimpanzee at the Uganda Wildlife Education center. Zakayo died at 54 years having lived at UWEC for the last 42 years as the most peaceful and exemplary chimp at UWEC and Uganda as a whole. His death came after three weeks of severe sickness that make the gentleman weak and powerless. For the three weeks, the sick Zakayo was under serious supervision by professional chimpanzee doctors who did everything possible to save Zakayo’s life. According to the doctors, Zakayo died of stomach (chronic gastroenteritis) and regret the loss. Also, the doctor’s report that zakayo’s old age weakened his immune system making him so susceptible to all kinds of infections hence would be sickly all times. Zakayo was a unique creature with distinct characters. When zakayo lost his leadership for the chimpanzee troop at Uganda wildlife education center, the old dad nurtured other two alpha chimpanzees to take over leadership. Matooke was the first to take over leadership in unto 2013 succeeded by Aluma who has been a leader since 2013 until to date.

In his early years, Zakayi was abandoned by his unknown family which made it homeless wondering in Semliki national park until 10th June 1964 when a white man picked it and raised it in his home. As time went on, Zakayo became more aggressive and uncomfortable in a human home and was therefore surrendered to Uganda wildlife education center on 19th June 1976. Zakayo’s story is so interesting, he was the first chimpanzee at UWEC who was put in a cage for visitors to see. At some times travelers would tease Zakayo by offering him alcohol and cigarettes to smoke, which made him very excited and happy.

Much as Zakayo had lost his leadership and dominance to the energetic ones, the old chimp attained high respect from the family, Zakayo who has now been a grand father retained the authority to instill peace and order in the family settling all the fights and misunderstands in the family. Also, zakayo would make sure all chimpanzees at UWEC entered and exited their cages at the right time.

has replaced general kale kayihura while Gen Elly Tumwine a war old-timer who fired a first shot of the National Resistance Army (NRA) war replaces gen henry Tumukunde as a new security minister. Brig Sabiiti Muzeyi is a new deputy for the inspector general of police.

The parallel leadership and misunderstanding between gen kale kayihura and gen Henry Tumukunde is one of the reasons for their sucking. On several occasions, the two leaders have been seen and hear accusing one another for failure of duty, which increased crime rate in Uganda. Since the start of this year, the two generals have been reported for taking different routes concerning keeping peace and security of Uganda citizens. Instead of supporting and joining hands to fight crimes in Uganda, the two police bosses have fought and disagreed on what to do but rather accusing one another.

The two generals, kayihura the inspector general of police and Tumukunde for the internal security organization have engaged in public wrangles where kayihura accused Tumukunde for failing to fight crimes in Uganda. It’s believed that the two have been on several occasions invited and urged to work together by the president but have remained parallel. To some Ugandans, the sucking of the two leaders was the best decision by the president since the two had failed to agree on how to keep Ugandans and their properties safe.

Leaving out all other crimes related to death and robbery, the latest kidnap and killing of the innocent Susan Magara Susan Magara turned to be a turning point for the Uganda police to clean up their house. Suzan’s’ death raised complaints on how the police would fail to trap the suspects who held Susan captive for three weeks while making continuous communications via mobile phone with the family of the deceased demanding for the ransom of 100musd to set her free. Its here that some people became suspicious on the negligence of the police.

Unlike kayihura whose life has been full of favor since he joined the Uganda police, Tumukunde’s life has been full of ups and down’s. After opposing the removal of term limits in 2003, Tumukunde was not o in good terms with his president (Museveni) after which he was forced to resign his position as the member of parliament for the army. The general was then arrested for violating army laws where he attended the media interviews something prohibited by all serving army officers. Kale kayihura his hello, general arrested him and too him to prison hence the start of the bias and hatred between the two police officers. Tumukunde stayed out of power until 2016 when president Museveni appointed again as the security minister for Uganda.
General Tumukunde was assigned by president Museveni to infiltrate and counteract all Amama Mbabazi’s work during his stand for the presidency of Uganda. The general was also retired from the army and then promoted from brigadier to lieutenant general. The appointing of Tumukunde, as a security minister by the president was the start of aggressive reactions by the inspector general of police general Kale Kayihura. Unfortunately, the minister has been fired before the expiry of his term of office. Both kale kayihura and the general Tumukunde are bush war veterans who brought president Museveni to Power.

The fights and misunderstanding between Gen kayihura and Gen Tumukunde has been blamed for the increase in criminal offenses in different parts of the country.
The rampant killing of several women especially in September 2017 in Nansana and Entebbe separated the two generals when Gen Kayihura openly accused Gen Tumukunde for the insecurity in the country. Tumukunde was confronted for having collaborated with paddy sserunjoji aka Sobi that whom did the police prosecute.
After the death of Felix late 2017, president Museveni urged Kayihura and his fellow Tumukunde to clean up their police house which statement he repeated last week at the burial of the late Susan Magara who was kidnapped and killed after three weeks.
