Important Christmas Tips for Uganda

0

As Christmas sets in, Ugandans are getting ready for the jolly festive season and preparations for the most celebrated day in the world are already underway.

Christmas in Uganda comes as a full package with everyone preparing for it in a special way. Everyone in Uganda wants to utilize this long awaited season to his or her satisfaction and this is most common among those with products and services to sell. We hope that our Christmas tips this season will help our readers by saving them from some unnecessary expenses and other costs.

Travel Tips
It is a common norm in Uganda that all transport operators hike their charges during the Christmas season. Transport charges from the capital Kampala to upcountry destinations are doubled and others tripled without justification. The transport operators basing on the fact that the people who travel upcountry for Christmas do not return immediately and therefore they drive empty vehicles on the return journey, they try to justify this sharp increment. In other words the high charge is designed to also to cater for the return journey. The only way out of this pain is to try and travel early before they hike the charges. Usually they start hiking five days before Christmas. Therefore for someone who plans to travel for distant journey is better to leave the capital at least a week before Christmas.

Security tips
While in Kampala, you should always be alert and conscious of the security of your property. Pickpockets and thugs are always everywhere in every corner and along every street in town. Property like luggage, handbags, wallets, phones and money should always be consciously kept as you move through the city. This vice is not only exclusive to Kampala but in each and every trading center you reach while on your journey, and to make things worse, these bad guys may also be traveling with you the very vehicle you boarded. You just have not to relax in your security at any point of time. Always ensure that you have kept all your belongings far away from where they can easily be snatched away from you. Personal security even matters much more than property, given the July 2010 incident when almost 80 Ugandans were bombed to ashes while watching a world cup final match at Lugogo, more care should be taken. If you are a reveler it is advisable to avoid over-crowded places to reduce any risk of another terrorist attack.

Shopping tips
Just like transport, prices for most of the items go high during Christmas. From foods to beverages, clothes to plastics among others, their prices almost double during the festive season. For curious shoppers, it is highly advisable that you arrange your shopping list early enough and approach your shopping mall or grocery early enough before the prices go crazy. Items like sugar, rice, and other cereal foods and drinks can be shopped and stocked in advance to avoid the Christmas exploitation.

Entertainment tips
There is always an entertainment corner in every town around Uganda on Christmas day. From music concerts to karaoke, movies to comedy, you really get much more than you expect on a Ugandan Christmas. Likewise, there are several Community-based Christmas tournaments that are organized with the finals staged on the D-day. These include football competitions, wrestling and athletics, all designed to quench the thirst of the revelers.

Eating
Lastly but not least, eating has never been so easy in Uganda like on Christmas day. The point I’m making is that you can eat anywhere and at any home in the community on Christmas. Ugandans become so generous on Christmas and food is served to any stranger with ease. If you happen to be one of the unlucky guys of the day and you find yourself with nothing at all to feast on, don’t hesitate, just branch at any nearby home and disguise as a visitor, trust me you will eat and pack.

Uganda’s Quiin Abenakyo Crowned Miss World Africa

0

The 22-year-old Miss Uganda was on Saturday declared Miss World Africa during the closing ceremony of the 68th Miss World contest in Sanya China after finishing third in the overall event.

Abenakyo scooped the third place in this year’s Miss World contest after becoming the first ever Miss Uganda to make it into the top five Miss World finalists.

Quiin was second runner up after the overall winner Vanessa Ponce De Leon (Mexico), first runner up Nicolene Limsnukan (Thailand) while Belarus’s Maria Vasilevich and Jamaica’s Kadija Robinson occupied the last two places respectively to complete the top five list.

All the top five beauty pageants were subsequently rewarded with continental crowns as winners from their respective continents, which saw Quiin Abenakyo taking the African crown.

After being crowned Miss Uganda 2018 back in August where she managed to beat other 21 contestants to the crown, Abenakyo was set for the next big step at the global level.

Her participation at the global level meant more fierce competition that saw her lining up against 117 other beauty queens from around the world.

When she made it in the final 30, already she had made history as the first Miss Uganda to make it that far in the competition. Her outstanding presentation about Teenage pregnancies as her purpose project to help the girl child in Uganda earned her a three way decision from the judges in her favor to cruise past her Argentine counterpart for a spot in top 30.

The next level saw Abeakyo’s country men and women being called into action to vote for her so that she could make it into the top five. Indeed Ugandans didn’t disappoint the 22 year old as thousands of Internet users in Uganda made it a point to cast their votes in her favor.

Gradually the incoming votes from Ugandans saw Abenakyo going up the ladder from twentieth to twelve and finally into the fifth position that guaranteed her presence in the finals.

Having made it into the top five, the ball had now shifted into her own hands and it was now about how well she answers the pre-recorded question displayed on a big screen to determine her overall performance.

Finally Abenakyo’s response won her second runner up and although she missed out on the overall title, her position and her involvement in the last five was such a huge achievement for a person who comes from a country that had reached nowhere near that level in the past.
That achievement also opened many doors of opportunities to her including a guaranteed involvement in the Miss World 2019 Beauty with a Purpose Tour.

In addition to inspiring many other Ugandan young girls who have similar ambitions, Quiin has also raised a bar upon which future Ugandan beauty queens will be aiming to match or beat.

Uganda joins International Community to mark World AIDS day

0

Today Uganda joins the international community to celebrate the world AIDS day. The main ceremony is set to take place in Manafwa district and President Museveni is expected to be the guest of honor to preside over the ceremony. This year the day runs on an international theme “Know your status”.

The World AIDS Day has been celebrated since 1988 with the major aim of raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and also to mourn those who have died of the disease. Internationally, the celebrations are majorly spearheaded by government’s health officials, non-government organizations with the message on AIDS prevention and control.

Uganda is one of the countries where the endemic has made devastating effects with the Ministry of Health indicating that the endemic has claimed between 1.5 million and 2 million lives since 1982. This has left over 1.8 million children orphaned according to the Ministry.

Figures from the Ministry of Health also indicate that there about 1.5 million Ugandans currently living with the Virus though there are arguments that the number of victims may be far higher than that.

AIDS became known in Uganda in the early 1980s and unfortunately most Ugandans mistook it for witchcraft and other traditional disorders basically because of the low advancement in the country’s medical science by then.

Still unfortunate for Uganda, AIDS has claimed mostly the young people in their productive years and they leave behind children increasing the dependence burden on relatives and guardians who adopt them hence crippling the country’s economic growth.

Uganda’s effort to control AIDS
Ever since the epidemic became known in the country, the government, non-government organization and all stakeholders the health sector in Uganda have not relaxed to fight it.

Uganda was the first country in Africa to open a voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) Clinic Centers commonly known as the AIDS Information Center as well as pioneering the concept of voluntary HIV testing centers in Sub Saharan Africa.

The high rate in the spread of HIV in 1980s and 1990s in Uganda created an urgent need for the government to educate and sensitize the people to know their status and learn how to control it. Subsequently the government adopted several approaches to try and control the endemic.

Among the approaches adopted include the Multi-Sectoral Control Approach that was adopted in 1992, the Uganda AIDS Commission was also founded in the same year and it has been instrumental in developing a national HIV/AIDS policy.

Several other programs have been developed including the implementation of birth practices and safe infant feeding counseling in 2000 by the Ministry of Health. After the implementation of this program, the Ministry reported that about 41,000 women received Preventing Mother To Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in 2001.

President Museveni has also been loudly applauded as far as the fight against the AIDS endemic is concerned. The President is majorly noted for spearheading a campaign known as the ABC program that focuses on sensitizing and encouraging Ugandans to abstain from sex, endorse monogamy and to use condoms in case the first two measures fail. This campaign has been widely spread through various institutions including schools at all levels and communities and it is believed to have produced much fruits.

Uganda Beat Cape Verde to Qualify for AFCON 2019

0

The Saturday victory over Cape Verde at Namboole in Afcon 2019, Uganda secured a second successive qualification to the tournament. The popularity of Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is increasingly growing from her famous and God-given talents to becoming regional and continental football giants.

The cranes secured a second successive qualification for the continent’s premium football competition after seeing off Cape Verde at Mandela national stadium Namboole following a 1-0 win thanks to striker Patrick Kaddu’s late second half header.

Prior to the match, confidence was high among both the fans and the players as the cranes needed just to avoid defeat to qualify. However, this did not stop the Cranes from putting up a strong start to the game that saw them miss out some clear cut chances against their West African Island counterparts.

The visitors also tried to respond well forcing the Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango to come to the rescue on several occasions including forcing a line clear clearance from defender Murushid Jjuuko to keep the hosts in the game.

Saturday’s qualification was the second in row for Uganda after waiting for 39 years to go back into the tournament before 2017. Uganda had last participated in the finals in 1978 where they lost in the final to Ghana. The Cranes had also taken part in 1972 and 1976 competitions.

Afcon 2019

Saturday’s victory was highly praised by The Cranes coach Sebastian Desabre who thanked his players for the solid performance they displayed and added that it is the most important victory he has achieved. Goal scorer Patrick Kaddu also thanked God for allowing him to score the single goal that sealed the country’s qualification.

The victory left Uganda as Group L leaders with 13 points in five games, Tanzania and Lesotho are tied with 5 points each while Cape Verde are bottom with four points. The other fixture in the same group saw Tanzania share points with Lesotho after a one-all draw on Sunday. The last fixture in the group will be played in March next year with Uganda visiting Tanzania while Lesotho will play Cape Verde. A victory in Tanzania will see Uganda finish with a record 16 points at the qualification stage.

Uganda is now part of the thirteen nations that have secured qualification to next year’s final in Cameroon, namely; Cameroon (Hosts), Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali, Madagascar and Mauritania.

Uganda will be hoping for a better tournament in Cameroon next year having endured a disappointing tournament last year in Gabon.
The Cranes were placed in Group D where they only managed one point that they secured after drawing with Mali in their final group match while they lost the two opening matches to Ghana and Egypt and they became the first nation to crush out of the tournament.

First Timers
Despite a 3-1 defeat to Sudan, Madagascar had already sealed their qualification last month and they were joined by Mauritania who beat Botswana 2-1 at home as the first time participants in the tournament’s history.

Uganda, the pearl of Africa, is not only famous in sports but also in tourism activities. With over 650 mountain gorillas, the country hosts big numbers of visitors that flock her for gorilla trekking.

Bobi Wine Rocks his fans in Kyarenga Concert

0

The fans and supporters of popular musician turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine on Saturday were entertained as they enjoyed some of their favorite music from the pop star during the Kyarenga concert at “One love beach” Busabala.

Bobi Wine who had been denied twice a chance to stage the concert at the national stadium of Nambole finally decided to host the event at his own “One love Beach” in Busabala.

The concert was hugely successful as an estimated total of 15,000 revelers turned up and enjoyed music from several top artists in the country.

Although the police had warned Bobi Wine not to turn the concert into a political rally, it gradually changed topic into the same as several musicians used the platform to declare their political ambitions and interest in political offices especially the legislature.

Several members of the opposition also attended the concert. Majority of revelers were dressed in red, a color locally popular among the opposition supporters. It was hugely a uniform of red T-shirts and red caps forming a red canopy of fans at the concert.

Musically Bobi Wine is popularly known for his politically motivating songs that include among others “Freedom” and they played a big role in rallying his fans to the concert. Having anticipated a politically entertaining atmosphere at the Busabala beach, the fans turned up in large numbers to confirm their support to the former “Ghetto President”.

Bobi Wine did not turn down his fans in that regard as he made some powerful political comments once he stepped on the stage. The popular artist turned politician was heard urging his fans to get national IDs in in order to participate in the 2021 elections. He also called upon the government to listen to the voices calling for change of leadership. He also thanked the Uganda Police for providing security during the concert and not stopping him as they have always done. Kyagulanyi added that they are peaceful people but they want to be listened to.

Before 2017, Bobi Wine was merely known as local musician majorly promoted by his political and welfare music. However in 2017, he declared his interest to run for a parliamentary seat during the Kyadondo East by-election, which he subsequently won. Since then, the musician turned out to be a leading opposition political figure majorly boosted by the fame that he had already attained as a musician.

Once he entered Parliament, Bobi Wine used his popularity among the fans to campaign for several opposition candidates who all won the various by-elections something that put him at loggerheads with the NRM government.
In September, Bobi Wine together with other three opposition members of Parliament were arrested in Arua district following the stoning of one of the President cars during the Arua Municipality Parliamentary by-election campaign.
Subsequently the legislators were charged treason and remanded to prison together with other 33 suspects. The detention of Bobi Wine and his alleged torture by security forces sparked off several protests in different parts of the country and due to increased pressure from his supporters, treason charges against him were dropped and he was also given bail. Bobi Wine turned out to be the winner after all these events as his popularity among Ugandans was increased and many started seeing him as a potential candidate for the presidency given his brave confrontation of President Museveni who has been in power for 32 years.

Kampala-Jinja Expressway Project approved by African Development Bank

0

A sovereign loan amounting to $229.5million has been approved by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the first phase of the Kampala-Jinja Expressway project. The Kampala-Jinja Expressway project is part of the government’s vision 2040 and its financing approval by the AfDB will be highly welcomed by the government and other stakeholders. The project will also be co-financed by the European Union and French Development for $400million and the private sector will finance the remaining $800million.

This mega project is expected to reinforce Uganda’s position as a regional transit hub and to support the government’s ambition to drive the country’s economy into middle-income status by 2020. In addition, the financing will also help to support the government’s second National Plan 2015-2020 that aims to improve the country’s competitiveness for sustainable wealth creation, growth and job creation.

Uganda has a 15-year National Transport Master Plan (NTMP 2008-2023) that aims at providing efficient movement facilities for both people and freight. The 95kilometer expressway project has an estimated cost of $1.55billion to be financed by both sovereign and non-sovereign facilities. Among the areas to benefit from the fund include infrastructure development, project implementation support and activities that improve community livelihoods along the route.

The project is expected to come with a variety of benefits right from its construction with about 2,000 direct and indirect jobs expected to be created during the construction process. Upon completion, it will improve economic productivity, competitiveness and regional trade and integration. Other problems to be solved include congestion in and around Kampala and the travel time between the capital and Jinja will also be reduced tremendously.

The construction project involves two phases that include the Kampala-Jinja Mainland Expressway and Kampala Southern Urban Bypass and the two projects combined form what is known as the Kampala-Jinja Expressway PPP Project.

The project also integrates a number of components including human capital development that focus on developing skills in Uganda and East Africa at large. It also aims to have over 200 PPP specialists to work in graduate/professional placements by 2028.

The construction of the Kampala-Jinja Expressway will be a great addition to Uganda’s road network which is her major mode of transport and a key player in unlocking her trade and economic potential within the East African community. The route will complement the long-standing Kampala-Jinja highway that has been very instrumental in the region’s trade especially in the last 20 years. The route constantly experiences traffic overload with over 1,000 vehicles per hour per lane.

The expressway will be strategically located along Uganda’s Northern Corridor connecting 5 countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan to the marine port of Mombasa in Kenya.

The route is one of the most important in the region’s trade handling 30 percent of Burundi’s international traffic, 60 percent of Rwanda’s and almost 100 percent for Uganda’s imports and exports via Mombasa port.

The project corresponds well with Uganda’s Country’s Strategy Paper 2017-2021, under its “Infrastructure Development for Industrialization” program. It also correlates with the Bank’s Ten –year Strategy (2013-2022) and consistent with three of its high five priorities: “Integrate Africa, Industrialize Africa, and improve the quality of life of the people of Africa”.

Also, the construction of the kampala-jinja highway will help to promote Uganda tours to Jinja especially to the source of the nile for boat cruising, kayaking, nature walks in Mabira and other related activities. Day excursions to jinja complement other tourism activities such as gorilla trekking in Bwindi/Mgahinga gorilla national parks, game viewing and chmipanzee trekking which together make a complete Uganda safari package.

The African Development Bank is very instrumental in Uganda’s transport sector and it has been one of the leading development partners in the sector.

Uganda to start producing smart phones

0

Uganda, the pearl of Africa, just as her nick-name suggests, has for long been known to be more productive in the tourism industry with her incredible wildlife experiences she offers to her travelers that can hardly be found anywhere else in the world. These include the unrivaled and exclusive gorilla safaris in Bwindi and Mgahinga parks not mentioning the other enthralling wild activities in her numerous national parks and wild reserves around the country.

However with the advancing technological waves increasingly driving the world into the tech-direction, Uganda is also getting on the receiving end of its benefits starting with the telecom industry.

American Telecom Company CTI Africa was yesterday unveiled by the government to start assembling smart phones in Uganda. While at the National Enterprises Corporation (NEC) in Bugolobi, Kampala, State minister for Investment and Privatization Ms. Evelyn Anite unveiled the Company’s Africa arm, LifeMobile to start assembling the phones.

The minister commented that as government they are very excited that CTI Africa is going to start assembling phones in Uganda. She added that Ugandans are carrying so many phones but none is manufactured here, so if Ugandans buy these phones, the country will diversify its economy because the dollars that would be spent on importing smart phones can be used here. Ms. Anite said that the government, through NEC has already allocated LifeMobile a site on 6th street in Industrial Area to set up their assembling plant.
The minister also concluded by saying that president Museveni will launch the first LifeMobile smart phone early next year.

The chief executive officer of CTI Africa, Mr. Michael Landau said that the assembling will help develop specialized applications to improve healthcare, mobile banking, insurance, microfinance and education services. The company is planning to invest $10million into the venture, which is expected to create over 400 jobs during their first phase of operation.

However, this will not be the first time LifeMobile is operating in Uganda because the company already has prospective partnerships with several local companies that include Jubilee Insurance for insurance services, Jumia Uganda for e-commerce, Ecobank and Microfinance Support Center for e-banking. Others include Medical Concierge and Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau for healthcare services.

According to Mr. Landau, the company is planning to build applications on their smart phones that are going to be very important in improving people’s lives. These apps will include healthcare, insurance, banking and e-commerce. He describes LifeMobile as the “transformation tool for the next generation” because they expect the smart phone to attract many big companies to Uganda.
Representatives from LifeMobile displayed three smart phone models during the unveiling ceremony that included low range, mid-range and a tablet and said that the applications on these smart phones will be piloted in Buikwe district.

According to the company representatives, the firm’s first smart phones to be produced in Uganda will be released between January and March 2019 and they added that the company has already received orders for about 75,000 smart phones. The company is also working on arrangements where people can buy on hire purchase in order to help more Ugandans acquire the smart phone easily.

Ms. Anite assured the investors about the government’s plan to protect the locally assembled phones against similar imported sets. She said that through “The buy Uganda, Build Uganda policy, the government shall put tax barriers for importation of products similar to those produced locally.

Maj Gen James Mugira who is the managing director of NEC, a body responsible for handling all government partnerships said that the arrival of LifeMobile is a symbolic moment for Uganda. He thanked the company representatives for choosing Uganda and added that they will entrust the company with the initiative to build a smart community and all the full support it needs.
